Former Prime Minister Theresa May announces decision to step down as Member of Parliament

In a recent statement, Theresa May, the former prime minister, revealed her intention to resign as an MP in the upcoming election.

May, who has represented the Maidenhead constituency for 27 years, described the decision as a challenging one. She cited the increasing demand on her time due to her advocacy for causes like human trafficking and modern slavery as a key factor.

Expressing gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving her constituents, May assured that she had always strived to address the local needs. Since stepping down as prime minister in 2019, she has embraced the role of a backbencher, focusing on constituency work and championing causes dear to her, including the recent launch of a Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

In her statement to the Maidenhead Advertiser, May acknowledged that dedicating more time to these causes has led her to realize that she wouldn’t be able to fulfill her duties as an MP as she deems fit for the future.

May affirmed her commitment to supporting the current Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and expressed confidence in the Conservative Party’s prospects in the upcoming election, expected later this year.

Reflecting on her years as an MP, including her terms as prime minister and home secretary in David Cameron’s government, May recognized the crucial role played by the people of Maidenhead, emphasizing that her political journey would not have been possible without their support.
