Wokingham Half Marathon gets underway

The Wokingham Half Marathon had a successful start this morning with bright clear conditions for running, if a little chilly.

The course was re-routed between miles 3 and 7 to avoid some flooded areas but with plenty of Marshalls the route was well-manned. Team Medics were on hand to deal with any medical emergencies but they were expecting minor injuries including sprains, dehydration and exhaustion while there were plenty of support from the crowd including Albert from the Chief Bark Squad (pictured).

Organisers were expecting some fast times today while plenty of other runners were hoping to raise money for charity. Speedy Banana (pictured) aka Tom Cripps was hoping to break a Guinness world record as the fastest male fruit to run a half marathon and Cat in the Hat was also running.

Deputy Mayor of Wokingham Borough Council, Adrian Mather, was at the start line and said: “Each year the event grows and really puts Wokingham on the map. The borough and town councils really welcome this event and want to say a big thank you to the organisers, the Marshalls and the scouts for the part they play in the day.”

The mini marathon also saw some half marathon runners of the future with the first boy over the line in just four minutes 28 seconds.
